Relief in sight for motorists as work starts By Georgia O’Connor-Harding and Tom Doudney WORK HAS begun on a $195 million motorway project tipped to drastically improve congestion problems for motorists commuting between Halswell and Rolleston. It is estimated that the peak travel journey times between the Southern Corridor and Halswell Junction Rd to north of Robinsons Rd near Rolleston will be shortened from about 30min to 15min. A NZ Transport Agency spokeswoman said the project is expected to reduce fatal and serious crashes by 40 per cent. A sod turning ceremony, attended by Prime Minister John Key, was held on Friday as work started on stage two of the southern motorway project. The project will see the current four-lane motorway extended by 13km through to Main South Rd, just north of Rolleston. The motorway will be made up of a new section of four-lane median separated motorway, and

will reduce high traffic volumes on State Highway 1. The project aims to reduce the number of deaths on the city’s motorways as well as connect the centre of town to the growing populations on the outskirts of the city. Meanwhile, work on other major motorways should be completed in the next two to four years as part of the NZTA’s
Roads of National Significance programme. Completion of the new Northern Corridor is scheduled for 2020, while the Western Corridor should be completed in 2018. As part of the southern motorway stage two project, a grass skink habitat relocation has been set up that can take more than 200 skinks.

Rubber factory opened in Wigram
By Sam Pickering WELL-KNOWN rubber company Skellerup opened its new factory in Wigram last week. The $60 million facility will cover 19,000 sq m in Stark Drive and employ about 200 people. Prime Minister John Key opened the factory. Skellerup has been synonymous in the rubber industry since it opened its factory in Woolston in 1910, and was a big employer in the eastern suburbs for decades. The products the factory makes range from industrial rubber products, dairy rubberware, waterproof footwear, closed-cell foam products, mining products, vacuum pumps and construction products. For many years it also made footwear at its Woolston plant. Company chairman Sir Selwyn Cushing said Skellerup’s Woolston site had been the company’s heart and soul for more than three-quarters of a century, and he expected the Wigram development would serve the company and its customers for at least as many years to come. “We had a very hard look at our options after the quake –

staying in Christchurch was clearly the best choice for the business,” he said. Skellerup chief executive David Mair said he is confident the factory will be a platform for future growth. “People said we should move to China, that didn’t actually stack up. So the great thing about this is there is a really good future here in Christchurch. The facility was acquired by Skellerup in May 2013 from Wigram Business Park developers and Ngai Tahu property.

In Brief COMMUNITY CENTRE The city council has approved the sale of a section of land at 199 Clarence in Riccarton to set the stage for the creation of the new Riccarton Community Centre. The city council owns part of the land. It will be sold for $3.3 million. The proceeds will go towards building the new centre on land formerly occupied by Robbie’s Bar and Bistro. CONSULTATION TO CLOSE Public consultation on the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway closes on Thursday at 5pm. The cycleway is planned to run from Halswell through Hoon Hay, Addington and Somerfield and involves lowering speed limits, removing car parks and changing road layouts throughout the route. CBHS celebrates high achievers CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School celebrated its success and named George Young as dux for 2016 in a prize-giving ceremony at the Aurora Centre for the Performing Arts in Burnside last week. He received several awards on the evening in biology, chemistry and classical studies and has turned down the offer of a scholarship to Otago in order to study science at Canterbury University next year. He joined Boys’ High from Heaton Intermediate in 2012 and steadily built up an academic record. In 2014, he gained a scholar award for NCEA level 1 and in 2015 followed this up with a gold scholar award. The proxime accessit, or runner-up to the dux of the school, is AJ Tyler. Council to build new pump station
By Bridget Rutherford A NEW $7.4 million pump station will be built in Harewood to replace a shallow well at risk of contamination. The city council will build the pump station on the site of its Harewood Nursery on Gardiners Rd, with work hoped to begin in February. It will replace the previous Harewood Pump Station, which would be decommissioned as part of the work. It was less than 26m deep, taking water from an unconfined aquifer, which put it at risk of contamination. The new pump station would also provide for growth in the north-west of the city, specifically the Upper Styx residential greenfield development area. City council three waters and waste planning and delivery manager John Moore said the city council had an agreement with the Ministry of Health to decommission its shallow wells in the north-west of the city by June 30, 2018. The new pump station will be completed by then.

Looking for the next IT genius By Andrew King SELWYN HOUSE School believes it could have the next Mark Zuckerberg in their midst. From next year, all pupils from the pre-school to year 8 will be taught mechatronics. It brings together science, technology, engineering, mathematics and a bit of art to teach pupils the basics of how robotic devices operate. Mr Zuckerberg invented Facebook in 2004 from his dormitory at Harvard University in the United States. Year 7 pupil Emma Cawood has really taken to the programming and said it is a huge opportunity for her. “It allows me to be creative because there is really no limit to what we can do. It has helped me with more knowledge in math and is really fun,” she said. Robotic and coding teacher Liz Fairhall said there is a massive need for women in information technology and this would provide a great pathway. “It really is going to push these girls into seeing that IT is an option as a career for them,” she said.

“Pupils are so lucky today with the technologies available to them and we want them to be given the opportunity to make the most of it,” she said. The goal of the programme is to teach the students a gradual progression of skills during their time at school until they have enough knowledge to build from scratch their own gadget in year 8. Boiler House,’ which comes complete with 3D printers, Lego robot kits, Apple TVs, workshop tools and other resources that facilitate a constructionist teaching philosophy. Constructionism is an increasingly popular educational theory where students learn through a project they are building.

Your Local Views Have your say Riccarton councillor Vicki Buck writes about developments in the southwest of the city and how you can have your say on issues in the area There are a number of big projects that need to get cracking very soon in our part of town. Probably the biggest is the south-west leisure centre which includes a covered pool, a new library and a service centre possibly co-located. This feels like its been a long time coming. We are hoping to get a start on public consultation of this, this side of Christmas, but otherwise it will be in the New Year. The other two big ones are Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub which we expect to see physical works start next year and also the Riccarton Community Centre. While these are the big ones, we also want to encourage new possibilities and new initiatives. So if it’s a community orchard, a community garden, a suggestion of a different way of doing youth grants, or some new ideas for play equipment

or even interesting bus stops we are very open to your ideas and suggestions. You know you can always come to any meeting of the city council and speak in the first session when we have vox pops, open to anyone to talk about anything. Whether its something you think would be an incredible idea or something that’s annoying you. Don’t feel constrained just because you’re not old enough to vote. We love hearing from young people. There’s no age limit and we’ve had a number of schools come and talk to us. You only get five minutes at this to get your point across. You’re also welcome to come talk about any local thing to your local community board where you usually get 10 minutes. Again don’t feel constrained by age or how long you’ve lived in the city. They are for everyone.

Research shows that cycling is safer when more people cycle. Parking isn’t a problem as eight to 10 bikes can park in one car parking space. Businesses don’t need to object because cyclists make purchases too – in Portland, Oregon, retailers found that cyclists spent as much as other people (smaller but higher-value goods). When more people cycle, the environment is quieter and less polluted and the population is healthier – less of an obesity problem. So everybody wins.

Garden club turns 70-years-old HALSWELL GARDEN Club celebrated 70 years of decorating and planting around the community. The celebration was held at the Oderings Garden Centre in Barrington recently. The club was first formed in Halswell Junction Rd on October 10, 1946. The club is still going strong
with a steady membership of about 70. Members from as far as Hokitika travelled to the city for afternoon tea to celebrate the anniversary. Over the years, members have undertaken volunteer work for the annual Festival of Flowers, made arrangements for Canterbury Museum and Princess
Margaret Hospital, and made decorations for A&P shows. The club has been based at several locations, including St Mary’s Church Hall and the Halswell Community Hall where a soup meeting was held once a year until the earthquakes. Now the club meets every second Tuesday of the month at 1pm in the Te Hapua: Halswell Centre.

Boys’ High in national cup By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School’s first XI booked its spot in the country’s biggest secondary school tournament after defeating St Andrew’s College at Hagley Oval. The Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup – formerly known as the Gillette Cup – is a weeklong tournament held annually at Lincoln University. The country’s top six secondary school cricket teams contest the tournament after winning their regional qualifying competition. Christchurch BHS and St Andrew’s played in the Canterbury qualifying final last week. St Andrew’s were first to bat and found itself struggling at 54/3 after 25 overs. Christchurch BHS bowler Josh Mariu was instrumental in restricting the run rate, going for just six runs from six overs. St Andrew’s picked up the run

LEAGUE: Tevin Arona was named Canterbury Bulls Sportsman of the Year at the recent Canterbury Rugby League awards held at the Hornby Working Men’s Club. The Hornby Panthers half-back helped his club reach the Massetti Cup grand-final, where they were defeated by the Linwood Keas 29-10. The 21-year-old then had an impressive representative campaign for the Canterbury Bulls, doing enough to be named in the New Zealand Residents. Arona recently picked up a pre-season contract with the Warriors and will head to Auckland to begin training on November 14.

FC Twenty 11 reach semi-final in youth tournament THE FC Twenty 11 under-19 boys’ football team came agonisingly close to an appearance in the final of a youth championship in Napier. The team lost 1-2 to eventual winner’s Onehunga Sports in the semi-final of the National Under-19 Youth Championships Satellite over Labour weekend. They were five minutes away from forcing extra time before their hopes were dashed by a late goal. FC Twenty 11 also had a boys and girls’ team in the final at the South Island Under-19 Tournament at Cuthberts Green. With the boys in Napier coming within reach of achieving the same mark, it could have been a day to remember for the club. The under-19 boys’ team were unbeaten in pool play, scoring 21 goals in five games, while conceding only three. They scored three more goals in their quarter and semi-final matches and conceded two. Overall, in seven matches, they

$165,000 plan to manage old trees By Bridget Rutherford ABOUT $165,000 will be spent developing a plan looking at ways to mitigate the effects of the city’s ageing tree population. The city council decided to write an Urban Tree and Forest Plan to plan how to manage trees in the future. It will look at ways to deal with the ageing population, climate change, urban heating, transport-related greenhouse gases and airborne pollutants, and ways to support Christchurch’s garden city image. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the plan, which will be completed in 2018, will provide “strategic direction” to deal with those factors. He said older trees could be managed by removing branches, or placing a mulch layer over the roots. However, it became costly the further the tree declined. “If trees decline to the point that personal health and safety may be at risk, we act accordingly.” Meanwhile, the city council has spent more than $257,000 over the past year on reports and assessments of trees.

reason, not just in relation to tree removals. In July, the city council set aside $30,000 for carrying out tree assessments at Bells Creek in Woolston as part of the flood mitigation scheme. City council land drainage
manager Keith Davison said, to date, $11,553 had been spent on arborist services for the $9 million project. He said that included the inhouse assessment of 317 trees across five sites. Thirteen of those trees were removed and replaced. The work was done to see what condition the trees affected by the work were in, and whether the scheme could be designed around them, Mr Davison said. Three reports and a memorandum were produced from the work. In all cases, the city council’s operational arborist team conducts its own assessment on the trees first. Additionally, it may commission an independent arborist for a report to get a peer review during high demand periods, in relation to significant trees, or for trees in heritage parks. A tree survey of the Avon River’s stopbanks in June was costed at $8798, while tree condition surveys along Dudley Creek was costed at $5416. July was the most expensive year for tree reports, costing $60,708, while in August, $27,334 was spent.

Keeping shoppers happy at the hub The Hub Hornby centre manager Jason Marsden, 45, has seen massive changes to the shopping complex during his 15 years in the role. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to him about the changing face of the hub, including its recent $75 million refurbishment Tell me about how The Hub Hornby has changed over the 15 years you have been there? I suppose the key things are when I first arrived there was no Pak ‘n Save. It was just an empty car park with a strip of shops on the western side. There was a little stand-alone concrete block row of shops right along that border and then the car park and mall, so immediately into the mall on that side we had the New World supermarket. Out the front facing Main South Rd, we had a separate building that housed BNZ, and I think there was a video store and cafe part of that little block of building as well. Would The Hub Hornby be interested in getting a movie theatre back? It is one thing a lot of people ask about, and I think with the movie industry at the moment, quite a number of big factors come into it. People themselves have changed how they consume entertainment. There are no plans for a movie theatre to be part of what we are doing here at the moment, but it is not to say one won’t be built in the future in Hornby. People have a strong emotional connection to having a movie theatre in their community, but unfortunately there is not enough patronage to back it up to make it a commercial success. What is it like running The Hub Hornby? It is a really interesting job I suppose. You are dealing with a huge chunk of the community. The mall is not just about a bunch of shops. The marketing side I find really interesting. I like trying new things such as the Halloween event we just had. Seeing the community’s response to the redevelopment, there
is a lot of pride amongst the community. What does a normal day for you involve? In a mall situation, it is so dynamic and you are dealing with all the unusual things that are thrown at you and you have to slot your normal work around that. You could be involved in anything from a dog that has been locked in a car to someone who has had a medical event, so there are a lot of things that need immediate responses. Are there any unusual events that stand out to you? We have had lots of different things happen here. There are certainly some things we have created that we are extremely proud of. Not only the growth of the mall itself, but things like the Maori artwork on the exterior of the building. The panels all relate to Canterbury from Aoraki right up to Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora – each panel has its own story and background. The other really neat thing is we are locally-owned and operated. We are up to about 200 shareholders now and they are all pretty much Canterbury people, including our tenants. And have you lived in the city your whole life? I grew up in New Brighton. For me, Hornby was just somewhere you drive through when heading south. It was quite a revelation when I started working here and shortly after that I moved into the area. Did you always have a business brain on you? It is really interesting. A lot of people come into retail property management for a lot of different reasons. For my formal training, I went and did a Bachelor of Science, majoring in physics. That was a natural curiosity

about things. Then I worked for the The Press for 10 and a half years. I started off there as a motorbike courier as my first job and then I went through to head of their classified sales team. I got to know many of the mall management people, as well as HG Livingstone Ltd, which is now real estate company Colliers International, which I work for. Then I had a year and a bit with an advertising agency, Waves Advertising. The marketing side has always been a passion for me and then this role came up. Were you ever interested in journalism? I would always end up writing a little article with some photos. For a small newspaper everyone gets roped in. I am into fourwheel-driving so I have done a little bit of writing for New Zealand 4WD Magazine. You have a four-wheel-drive club?
Yes, I am a member of the Canterbury Recreational 4WD Club, which is probably the biggest in Canterbury – we have about 100 members. It is probably the only club that has a tyre size limit so that is really important when it comes to preserving tracks and not creating deep ruts and that. We have a big environmental focus. Is there one favourite place you like to go? In New Zealand, my absolute favourite place would have to be Fiordland. It is such a special place. The proper glaciers, dramatic mountains, waterfalls, ocean and wildlife is pretty hard to beat I think. Right from the time you drive through the Homer Tunnel; that is really like going through the wardrobe in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe so you emerge in a completely different world.
What were you like at school? I was strong in the sciences, wood work, technical drawing. Probably a bit weaker in chemistry and math. I love physics and classical studies. I do enjoy the history side of things, which is another passion of mine – studying Viking culture and genealogy. I am involved in a history group called the Society for Creative Anachronism Inc. That is an American group that has been in this country for many years. Do you have any other hidden talents we don’t know about? I have a diploma in musical theory, but that is ancient history now. Unfortunately, as much as I studied music, I have got very little talent. I learnt piano for seven years. I have dabbled with a few string instruments, older-type instruments, Middle Eastern drumming, but again, there is lots of enthusiasm but little talent.

Gardening Have a holiday with livingstone daisies By Tod Palenski IF YOU’RE after some no-fuss colour for your garden this summer, look no further than livingstone daisies. This brightly-coloured plant is the perfect flower to grow over the warmer months – particularly if you’re going away at all. No need to set sprinklers to timer for livingstone daisies. It thrives in dry, sunny and windy conditions. In fact, the only weather element you really need to worry about when growing livingstone daisies is whether there’s any chance of frost. Once you’re past the chance of frost, these pretty daisies will flower almost all year. They are also fantastic for growing in borders and creating mass displays of colour due to the succulent, spreading nature of the plant. Find a spot in your garden that gets full sun and plant each seedling about 30cm apart from the next. Once established the flowers will open to the sun and the plant will grow to around 15-

By Tod Palenski IF YOU ask me, globe artichokes can be a little intimidating. Visually, they’re statuesque and striking. And, while they have a reputation as a culinary delicacy, to the novice it can be hard to tell how they should be eaten at all. In spite of all of this, artichokes are actually a very easy plant to grow. Possibly that’s to make up for the fact they do require a bit of work to cook … and eat. So, if you’ve ever wondered about growing artichokes I can tell you, wonder no more – just get planting. Because artichokes (not to be confused with jerusalem artichoke, which are nothing at all like globe artichokes) are not particular about where they grow, you can choose anywhere in the vegetable garden to plant. Alternatively, why not use that intimidating visual appearance to your advantage and plant them with your flowers. I suggest growing them in the background as they can reach around 2m tall.
When you’ve found the right spot, plant each artichoke about 50-100cm apart from the next. Because we’re coming into summer it pays to keep an eye on how dry they get and try to keep them watered regularly. It’s also a good idea to apply a mulch to help keep the soil consistently moist. In around 20-24 weeks you can expect to see your first flower buds. It’s the inner petals and the base of the bud that is eaten. And it’s important, if you want to eat them, to harvest the buds while the petals are still tightly wrapped. This way the hairy choke inside (which is scraped out to reveal the ‘heart’ of the artichoke) won’t have developed too much. This heart is where all the flavour of the plant is. The first head will be the biggest and then smaller heads will develop off this. Harvest the heads by cutting just below the bud and include a small amount of stem. If you decide not to harvest and eat your artichoke, the flowers will develop into giant thistle-like seed heads.
